Instant crypto swaps · Fixed-rate exchanges · Fiat purchase options · Transaction tracking
Changelly is one of the oldest recognizable names in instant crypto exchange, having operated since 2015. It began as a simple way to convert digital assets without trading manually and has grown into a service that offers crypto-to-crypto swaps, fiat purchases, a mobile app, and API tools for partners. In market terms, it is a veteran convenience platform, not a low-cost trading venue. That distinction explains both its appeal and many of the complaints directed at it.
The service is designed for people who want to move from one coin to another without depositing funds into a conventional exchange account. You choose a pair, provide a receiving address, review the estimate, and send funds to the generated deposit address. The process is easy enough for a newcomer, although newcomers should never mistake simplicity for safety. Sending an asset on the wrong chain or entering a bad address can still create a costly problem.
Changelly's most controversial feature is its pricing. Its traditional floating-rate crypto exchange model has commonly used a 0.25 percent service fee, but that figure does not represent the entire economic cost of a swap. The quoted rate also reflects available liquidity and spread. On some popular pairs, Changelly's output is reasonable. On others, especially small assets or volatile conditions, it can be noticeably worse than the rate a user could achieve through an order book.
This is why I don't recommend Changelly to users who trade frequently or in large size. A 0.25 percent visible fee may sound modest, but the all-in cost can be larger once the execution rate is considered. For a quick conversion of a modest amount, convenience may justify that premium. For a $20,000 conversion, it is worth spending five minutes comparing the net payout against Kraken, Binance, Coinbase Advanced, ChangeNOW, and another instant exchanger.
Changelly also offers fixed-rate transactions for selected pairs. That option is valuable because it gives the user a known expected result rather than exposing the entire order to market movement during processing. There are conditions, naturally. The sender must transfer the correct amount in time, use the correct network, and follow the instructions precisely. Fixed rates reduce price uncertainty. They do not fix mistakes, blockchain congestion, or compliance holds.
Speed has generally been respectable for standard swaps. Once a deposit reaches the necessary confirmations and the liquidity route is available, many orders complete within minutes. Bitcoin can be slower, particularly if the sender uses a low network fee. Token swaps may also take longer during Ethereum congestion or if a partner platform is conducting maintenance. Changelly's interface does a reasonable job of showing transaction progress, which is more useful than a generic processing message.
The company has a longer operational history than most instant exchange competitors, and that counts for a lot. It has processed a large number of customer exchanges, built integrations with wallets and external services, and survived several market cycles. Longevity is not a blank check. Still, it is evidence that Changelly is an actual operating business rather than a temporary website with a swap widget and little accountability.
Its reputation is complicated rather than uniformly glowing. Changelly has many satisfied users who appreciate its ease of use and wide availability. It also has a visible history of complaints involving delayed transactions, unfavorable final rates, and KYC or AML verification requests. The complaint pattern is not unusual in this sector, but Changelly's age means there are more examples available. Readers should interpret that volume in context, not assume that every complaint proves misconduct.
Changelly does not require every user to create a full exchange account for a basic crypto swap, and it has often been marketed as a privacy-friendly alternative to centralized trading platforms. Yet it can request KYC documentation when a transaction triggers compliance controls. This is plainly stated in its policies, even if users do not always read those policies before sending. If you need a guaranteed no-document transaction, Changelly is not a safe assumption.
The handling of flagged funds is where trust can be strained. Users can feel trapped if assets are held while documents are requested, especially if they chose an instant service precisely to avoid an account-based exchange. Changelly needs to follow legal and partner obligations, but the customer experience can still be poor if the explanation is generic or the review takes too long. Don't use it for funds from sources that could invite blockchain-risk scrutiny unless you can document them.
Security is strongest where the customer remains in control. Changelly does not encourage users to keep an exchange balance on its site, which limits one common custodial risk. The company also offers account security features in products where accounts apply. The more immediate danger is phishing: fake Changelly sites, copycat adverts, and fraudulent support agents can steal a transaction before the real service is involved. Use a bookmarked official domain and verify every detail before sending.
Customer support is available through live chat and email, with an extensive knowledge base for routine issues. In ordinary cases, Changelly is capable of giving useful status updates. The support reputation becomes less favorable in difficult cases, particularly compliance reviews and refunds. That is not a reason to dismiss the service outright, but it is a reason to preserve evidence. Keep the transaction hash, order ID, screenshots, and communication history until the payout is safely received.
Compared with ChangeNOW, Changelly has more years behind its name but can feel less aggressively priced on some routes. Compared with a major order-book exchange, it is much easier for a one-off self-custody swap but usually more expensive. Compared with a little-known instant exchanger, it offers a much more developed history, public documentation, and recognizable brand. Those are meaningful advantages for a user deciding where to send irreversible crypto.
I see Changelly as a reliable convenience service with a premium attached. It works best for users who value an established name, a simple interface, and broad swap access more than the lowest possible execution cost. It is a poor fit for high-frequency trading, very large orders, or anyone who cannot tolerate the possibility of a compliance review. Use fixed rates when predictability matters, compare the final quote, and treat it as a conversion tool rather than a bargain marketplace.
Who it suits
Changelly suits casual users who want an established instant exchange for a modest self-custody conversion. It is especially appropriate for people who value fixed-rate availability and a long operating history. Traders moving large amounts should seek executable spot prices elsewhere. Users who need certainty that no identity review will occur should not rely on Changelly or any comparable centralized swap service.

Verdict
My take on Changelly
Changelly remains a credible name because it has survived for years and made crypto conversion approachable for ordinary wallet users. Its real weakness is price, not basic usability. You are often paying for convenience, brand familiarity, and routing rather than getting the sharpest possible rate. That trade can make sense for a modest, routine swap. It makes much less sense for serious trading volume, where its spread and fee structure deserve hard scrutiny.
Review questions
Changelly FAQ
What fee does Changelly charge?
Changelly has commonly charged a 0.25% service fee for floating crypto exchanges. The final cost also includes the quoted market spread and network-related costs.
Can Changelly ask for KYC?
Yes. Basic swaps may not require an account, but Changelly can request identity or source-of-funds documents when its compliance systems flag a transaction.
Is Changelly safe for large transactions?
It has a long operating record, but large transactions should be split only where appropriate and compared against other quotes. Be prepared for compliance checks and verify all addresses.
How fast are Changelly swaps?
Many standard swaps finish within minutes after deposit confirmation. Bitcoin confirmation time, network congestion, liquidity maintenance, and reviews can cause longer waits.
